The London Institute of Banking and Finance has launched its annual Young Financial Journalist competition 2019-20, in partnership with the Financial Times. The competition is open to students aged 14-19, competing in three age categories.
Catherine Winter, Head of Financial Capability at The London Institute of Banking & Finance says: “Building financial confidence and know-how is essential for young people, particularly as they get ready to leave school. But from our regular research we know that young people worry about managing their money and would like more financial education. It’s been on the curriculum for five years, but very little seems to have changed. More needs to be done to engage young people and to improve how it is delivered. We work with schools around the country to help them deliver effective programmes and qualifications, and this competition is one way to spark children’s interest. If it prompts teachers to ask what more they can do in the classroom – so much the better.”
Students have until January 2020 to submit their entries, so there is still plenty of time to showcase their personal finance journalism skills! There is a cash prize of £150 to be won, as well as the chance to be published in the Financial Times and/or FTMoney. The winning entries for each category will be announced in February 2020.
